Required Summer Book: Old Yeller by Fred Gibson

Dear Parents and Students,

Summer reading is crucial if students want to maintain their reading skills throughout the long summer break. Therefore, we would like to encourage pleasure reading for the summer as well as the completion of a required book for summer reading.

Please complete this book before the start of school.  Students will take an AR Quiz on this title and complete a review with their Design teacher when they return to school.

Two additional books are required for summer reading.  These books may be of the student’s choosing but must be within the appropriate reading level for middle school students. The print books, or eBooks, may be fiction or non-fiction at a 4.5 reading level or higher. A Learner Profile project is not required for the two additional books, but be prepared to share in class the titles you read and whether or not you would recommend them to your friends or for placement in our Media Center collection.

Union Academy eBook Collection: Students have the option to select eBooks for the reading purposes using our eBooks collection on Destiny. They may access hundreds of eBooks on their stand-alone computers, iPads, and smart phones. In order to get access, you may use our Catalog “Destiny” to locate and read eBooks online (please make sure the book is a 4.0 or higher reading level). To access Destiny from the school board home page (polkschoolsfl.com), click the student tab and then the ONLINE RESOURCES link. You will see Follet Destiny located at the top. Find Union Academy under the middle school link on the left and then click “log in” located in the upper righthand corner. Once Destiny Discover loads, you will see “Welcome and Your Name”. This indicates that you are logged in correctly and ready to download books from the catalog. You should now see our entire collection of eBooks. Simply click on the title of the book you wish to read. Below is your log in information:
Login ID: 5300 and their AR number (no spaces). The password is the same as their login.
*NOTE – If you are not logged in, you will not be able to download your eBook.

Students may also read eBooks using their PLUS account through the public library system. You can access PLUS from the online resource link as well.
