Welcome Students and families to the 19-20 school year at Union Academy!
Our orientation for 6-8th grade will be held Thursday, Aug. 8th, from 4pm-6pm. Orientation packets will be available for pick up in front of the gymnasium.
With the implementation of the new school district policy for student ID badges last year, UA has been working on a way to better protect the badge from normal wear and tear during the school year. UA will be selling a badge holder (picture below) that includes a zipper pouch for a key, at Orientation and throughout the year for five dollars. Students also have the option of purchasing their own lanyard that may include designs suitable for school. We have included some sample pictures below to help you decide which type of lanyard will be perfect for your student! If badges are lost or damaged throughout the year, there will be a five dollar replacement fee for materials used. Please call the Union Academy office if you have any questions, 534-7435! Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Union Academy Administration is excited to announce that our school received an A school grade for the 18-19 school year! We would like to congratulate our students and families, teachers, staff and community members for working so hard everyday to help support our students, giving them all the tools they need to be the best that they can be!
A message about Polk County Public Schools’ Bus Call Center:
Polk County Public Schools is opening a call center to handle school bus inquiries and issues for the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.
Parents and guardians can dial 863-534-7300 for assistance from Monday, July 29 through Friday, Aug. 23. The temporary call center will be staffed on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.*
Staff will be able to provide help with all manner of transportation questions, including student bus numbers; stop times and locations; transportation eligibility; bus delays and other topics.
“Last year, we heard from parents who said that they couldn’t reach members of our transportation staff during the first several days of school. We want parents to know that we heard them loud and clear, and the creation of this call center is our response,” said Superintendent Jacqueline M. Byrd. “We are committed to continuously improving the services we provide to our students and their families.”
Please understand that bus delays are typical at the start of the school year, but will become less frequent after the first few weeks of school. In addition to the call center, parents and guardians can access their child’s transportation information online through the Parent Portal (polkschoolsfl.com/parentportal). Schools will continue to receive transportation materials, as well. We look forward to taking your calls and welcoming you back for another great school year!
*The call center will open at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 29 and will be closed on Friday, Aug. 2 because of the district’s summer schedule. Otherwise, it will be available on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday, Aug. 23.

About the Controlled Open Enrollment (COE) Process
Each student shall attend his/her zoned school unless approval is granted to transfer to another school (including public schools in surrounding counties), pursuant to state law. Parent seek to enroll their children in a school other than their “zoned” school for a variety of reasons. Pursuant to HB 7029, beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, parents seeking additional choice options for their student(s) may apply for placement for their child in any school in the state that has not reached capacity (available seats). Controlled Open Enrollment allows school districts to make student school assignments based on the parent’s indicated school of choice. Approved COE applicants will be notified in writing once the enrollment period ends. You are required to take your notification letter to the assigned school to obtain a class schedule.
- Transportation to and from the transfer/placement school is the responsibility of the parent or guardian.
- Student Hardship Transfer/Placement is available for students within Polk County.
- Student Hardship Transfers/Placements and Employee Transfer/Placement requests must be renewed each year.
- COE Applications are available during the appropriate time periods on the District’s website, and paper copies are available upon request.
- IEP requirements cannot be guaranteed for students accepting a COE Transfer/Placement.
